tl;dv sends a notetaker. Jotted sends nothing.

tl;dv is a capable recorder with a generous free tier and good clipping tools. It also works the way most of this category works: a bot joins your meeting and records it from the inside.

Short answer: tl;dv and Jotted both keep the video, which already puts them ahead of the transcript-only tools. The difference is the bot. tl;dv joins your call as a participant; Jotted records your screen from your own computer, so nothing joins and nothing can be blocked.

tl;dv has better clipping and highlight tools. Jotted has no bot, no length caps, and keeps every file on your own disk.

Why people go looking

"Another participant nobody invited"

It is in the list, your client can see it, and on a first call it is one more thing to explain.

"Blocked by the other side's IT"

When a company blocks outside meeting bots, a bot-based recorder produces nothing at all. There is no fallback.

"I want the file on my own disk"

Cloud-first tools mean your meetings live somewhere else by default, even when you would rather they did not.

Where tl;dv is the better choice

tl;dv's clipping and highlight features are better than anything Jotted has, and if your workflow is about pulling short moments out of calls to send to a team, that is a real reason to choose it.

It also has team features and integrations that Jotted deliberately does not offer.

The short version

Credit where it is due: tl;dv keeps the actual recording, which a lot of notetakers do not, and its free tier is unusually generous. Its feature set is genuinely good.

The price is the sticking point. Paid plans start around $29 per seat a month, which is roughly double Jotted's $14, and you are still getting a bot in the call.

The bot is the structural difference. Because tl;dv records from inside the meeting, it depends on being allowed in. That is fine until a client's IT department blocks outside bots, or a prospect asks what the extra participant is, or the bot joins a call you had not planned to record.

Jotted never touches the meeting platform. It records the display you choose plus your microphone and the system audio, which means it works identically in Zoom, Meet, Teams, Webex, or a phone call played through your speakers. There is nothing to allow and nothing to block.

The other difference is where things live. Every Jotted recording is written to your own disk first, on every plan, and stays there. On the free plan nothing is uploaded anywhere at all.

Common questions

Does tl;dv join my meeting as a participant?

Yes, it uses a bot that appears in the call. Jotted records from your own desktop, so nothing joins and the other participants see no extra attendee.

Do both keep the video?

Yes, and that puts both ahead of transcript-only notetakers. The difference between them is the bot and where the files live.

What happens on a call where recording bots are banned?

A bot-based tool cannot record at all. Jotted is unaffected, because it is recording your own screen rather than joining the meeting.

Where are my Jotted files stored?

On your own computer first, always, on every plan. Pro additionally backs them up to the cloud after the call, and the two copies are independent.
